Sometimes the most meaningful careers begin by accident, when an unexpected opportunity opens the door to a passion that shapes the rest of your journey.
For Becky Fisher, a chance opportunity on a job site 24 years ago sparked a lifelong passion for construction. For her, the industry has always been about more than the projects themselves. It is about building strong teams, supporting growth, and helping others succeed.
After going into an interview for a receptionist position that ended up being filled just the day prior, Becky was offered to interview for a Field Office Manager position. She started in the field a week later. At this point she expected her construction career to be temporary, but she quickly began to find her path in this industry. By her next project, Becky was promoted to Project Coordinator, and within a year she advanced to Project Engineer. From the beginning, she approached every role with the same mindset of taking on as much as possible, learning everything she could, and sharing that knowledge with the people around her.
Starting out, Becky had no experience in construction. She stated, ” Everything I have learned in my career has been largely due to my project team members, design team members, and trade partners taking the time to teach me. I owe everything to them. Of course, I had to be willing to ask the questions, make mistakes, and learn from them.”
One of Becky’s biggest challenges early in her career was confidence. It took time for her to find her voice in meetings and trust that her experience and perspective were valuable. As she began speaking up more, it became easier. “Sometimes I was wrong, and that was okay,” she says. “I learned from it and moved forward.”
Over time, the people she worked alongside played a major role in shaping her experience in the industry. The teamwork, shared challenges, and collective problem-solving became the driving force behind her continued growth. Becky values the opportunity to learn from mistakes and continuously improve alongside her teammates. Throughout her career, many of her biggest moments of growth came from leaders who invested in her development. Today, she finds the same fulfillment in helping others grow — whether through mentoring, training, career coaching, or everyday interactions.
Along the way, Becky has learned the importance of clear communication, prioritization, and maintaining a healthy team culture. Experiences with different leadership styles helped shape her approach to management and reinforced the value of trust, respect, and collaboration on a project team. She believes strong teams stay focused on solutions, support one another through challenges, and create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow.
Looking ahead, Becky hopes to impact the next generation of women entering the construction industry by encouraging them to be themselves and move forward at their own pace. While the industry can be challenging for anyone, she believes that understanding your priorities and defining success for yourself is key to building a fulfilling career.
For Becky, that perspective shaped many of the decisions she made along the way. At one point in her career, she chose to remain a Project Engineer for several years so she could coach her children’s sports teams, volunteer in their classrooms, and be present for important family moments. For her, that balance was an intentional choice — one that allowed her to grow professionally while still prioritizing what mattered most at home.
Today, Becky encourages others entering the industry to trust their instincts and recognize that every career path looks different. The construction industry offers countless opportunities to learn, grow, and find your own way forward.
Her advice is simple: trust yourself, value your experiences, and continue pushing yourself to grow.
“Your potential is only limited by your willingness to grow, your determination, and the vision you have for yourself.”
